Blue velvet curtain
Sitting in the small prayer chapel I looked up and saw a Celtic cross in the middle of the wall. On each side of the wall were long, thick, plush, blue velvet curtains hanging from the ceiling to floor. Each was held up by brass curtain rods and rings. The blue cloth illuminated tiny reflections of light that seemed to splash a glow like radiance from its velvety texture. Extended on the floor were gently gathered soft piles of pleats almost perfectly placed on both sides. When one walks in this room of the pale colors of dull tans, browns and off white tones, the obviousness and the dramatic presence of the curtains stand out. Almost scream out. The representation of royalty definitely speaks high volumes loud and clear.
These visual images speak volumes to my heart. Being a visual learner helps and during my times of prayer, I often reflect on various visuals, noticing the unnoticeable and muse on my meditations upon the holy God-Jesus. These things happened as I sat in this still quiet room, eyes fixed on the velvet curtains, heart prepared to listen.
The visual of the curtains immediately reminded me of the veil, also known as the curtain that was torn in two when Jesus cried and gave up His life. Likewise these curtains were in pieces of two one on each side of the wall.
Matthew 27:51
"And behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth shook and the rocks were split."Mark 15:37-39
"And Jesus uttered a loud cry, and breathed His last. And the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. When the centurion, who was standing right in front of Him, saw the way He breathed His last, he said, "Truly this man was the Son of God!"The unnoticeable was the way the end of the curtain gathered so perfectly on the floor.
They were reminding me of Jesus’ perfectly gathered grave handkerchief that was around His head. He had folded this after leaving the tomb, before He was soon to be leaving this earth resurrected to join His heavenly Father to sit next to Him on the throne.
John 20:6-8
"Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; and he saw the linen cloths lying there, and the handkerchief that had been around His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but folded together in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who came to the tomb first, went in also; and he saw and believed."
The sweet muse of meditations were reflecting on the great love that Jesus had for us by being obedient to the cross by doing what He saw His Father doing. And doing what His Father asked of Him. What great love for us, passionately motivating Him to leave a glorious throne, be confined to a human body, that body smashed on a Roman cross …all for the sins of the entire world that all might come to know Him as Lord. The seriousness and intensity of this sacred holy act, never ever before done or since was all captive in the visual of those two blue curtains
Philippians 2:8
"And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross."John 5:19
"Then Jesus answered and said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner."Spending relational time with God, through His son Jesus, is so simple. Join me in this simple spiritual discipline. Muse, meditate, pray and seek the throne of the One and Only triune God-Jesus.
